Former United States women’s national team goalie Hope Solo made strong accusations against her former teammate Megan Rapinoe, saying that Rapinoe was ‘almost bullying’ her teammates into kneeling for the national anthem.
Rapinoe began kneeling for national anthem in 2016 joining in with Colin Kaepernick’s protest against racial injustice and social inequality. As time passed, more of her teammates joined her in the kneeling. Solo told ‘Goal’ she saw Megan Rapinoe “almost bully players into kneeling because she really wants to stand up for something in her particular way.” She also spoke about how strongly Rapinoe pushed others to join her.
Solo believes it’s Americans’ right to do what they are comfortable with, and not be pressured with political issues, especially in the athletic realm. Solo states, “there’s a lot of pressure, and ultimately, at the end of the day, our number one focus should and has always been to win first.”
Solo last played for the United States women’s national team in 2016. This was the same year Rapinoe began kneeling during the national anthem. It is still unclear as to whether Hope Solo actually witnessed Rapinoe bullying teammates into kneeling or if it is secondhand information from Solo’s former teammates.
