WEIRD SCENE: Beto O’Rourke, Willie Nelson host extremely odd event fundraising for TX Democrats

Former Congressman Beto O’Rourke and artist Willie Nelson, two notable Texans, have started a fundraising campaign to assist Texas Democrats to “advocate for voting rights in Washington, DC” (KVUE).

Texas House Democrats left the state to head to Washington, DC to break quorum during the Texas Legislature’s special session. Governor Abbott of Texas declared that House members who left the state would be arrested. As a result, O’Rourke has raised more than $525,000 to cover the Texas Democratic legislators’ expenses during their stay in the nation’s capital. Nelson has also donated $5,000 to the cause.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) has shown their support for Texas Democrats saying that they will pay bail for the Democrats if they are arrested upon their arrival back in Texas. “War has been declared on democracy, and we will support anyone who stands up to defend it,” NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson said in a statement on Twitter. “We are fully invested in good trouble.”

Currently, Texas Democrats say that they will stay in Washington, DC for as long as possible to block the Republican voting bill from passing (Axios). According to The Hill, the GOP voting bill would put in place limits on early voting and curbside voting, bar round-the-clock voting centers, and limit drop boxes. A number of aides with the Republican National Committee also demonstrated outside of the DC hotel where the Democrats are staying in protest.
