President Joe Biden, who was touring North Carolina on the 24th, claimed it was “it’s awful hard to get Latinx vaccinated” because they feared deportation.
He stated that “they’re worried that they will be vaccinated and deported,” in response to the vaccination rates being low in the Latino community across the country. As of June 21st, 61% of White Americans are vaccinated, 12% Black Americans, 17% Hispanic Americans, 6% Asian Americans, and ~2-3% are other (CDC).
Congresswoman Lauren Boebart tweeted the clip a day later, stating “More of that classic Biden racism. Apparently the only reason Latinos don’t want to get vaccinated is because they fear getting deported. So according to Joe all Latinos are illegals?” Jenny Garcia Sharon, a Republican candidate in Texas, also added: “Since when are all Latinos/Latinas illegal that if they get vaccinated they’ll be deported?”
President Biden is also facing backlash on twitter for using the term “Latinx”, as the majority of the U.S. Hispanic population, according to Pew, do not refer to themselves as “Latinx”. “About One-in-Four U.S. Hispanics Have Heard of Latinx, but Just 3% Use It” Pew Research reported. “Latinx” was trending on twitter over the weekend, in light of the President’s speech in North Carolina.
