The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) force has said they caught 180,034 illegal immigrants trying to cross the border during the month of May.
That’s a slight increase in apprehension from 178,854 in April and 172,000 in March. To put this number into perspective, it’s the largest monthly total since April 2000, with most of those caught being single adults coming increasingly from countries outside of Central America. The number of unaccompanied minors from Central America dropped from 13,940 in April to 10,765 in May according to the figures, with the average daily number of children in its custody falling to 640. However another 16,200 children are still being held by the Department of Health.
The agency has also revealed that of the 180,034 people apprehended in May around 112,300 individuals have been previously expelled under former President Trump’s Title 42 policy. The CBP’s update comes as Vice President Kamala Harris finishes her two-day trip to Mexico and Guatemala, which aimed to deal with the “root causes” of migration, such as poverty and violence. In an interview shortly after Harris left the country Guatemala’s President, Alejandro Giammattei, levelled the blame at Biden’s feet.
Telling Fox News that “You can see that humanitarian messages were used here by the coyotes in a distorted manner…. They said that they were going to support family reunification…. So, the coyotes came and took the children and teenagers to the United States. And the border filled up. Not only with people from Guatemala, but lots of people…. That’s why we have suggested that the messaging be clear.” When talking about family reunification he took a swipe at an executive order Biden signed back in February which established the Family Reunification Task Force to reunite unaccompanied minors that had been separated from their families and detained under the Trump administration.
The President of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, has also blamed Biden for the chaos taking place along the southern border. Whilst taking a press conference in March he explained that Biden’s administration had set “expectations” that migrants would receive better treatment, and that “this had caused Central American migrants, and also from our country, wanting to cross the border thinking it would be easier to do so. People don’t go to the United States for fun, they go out of necessity.”
On the home front President Biden is also facing pressure from inside his own party for his handling of the crisis. One Texas democrat blasted Biden and Harris for providing “incentives” for illegal immigration and shying away from “uncomfortable” but effective policies. AOC also sharply criticized Biden’s handling of the border saying, “It’s wrong and it’s inhumane.”
