If you look closely enough you can find real life superheroes. While these heroes might not wear funny outfits or have super powers, they still can have a major impact on society. The past few weeks, Dave Portnoy has done his best superhero impersonation by helping out small businesses across the country.
It’s no secret that many businesses and people have been struggling due to the Covid-19 pandemic. According to Yelp, as of August 15 there have been 97,966 permanent closures of businesses. There have been 65,769 temporary closures. While things like the PPP loan and the stimulus checks are beneficial, for some it’s not enough.
Dave Portnoy, founder of the company Barstool Sports, has taken matters into his own hands. He recently created what he calls “The Barstool Fund.” The goal of the fund is to give money to small businesses that are struggling in order to help them make it through the rest of the pandemic.
According to the video on The Barstool Fund page, there are not many requirements to be able to apply for the fund. One of the biggest requirements is that the business must still be employing at least part of its staff. The business has to be struggling financially as well. Anyone can help out and donate, however.
Kid Rock is the latest celebrity to help out in the fund with a donation of $100,000 (Manfredi). Tom Brady, quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, quote tweeted a video of Portnoy speaking to a business owner and said, “This is awesome Dave. Count me in.” No information has been released on whether or not Brady has yet to financially contribute, but it is likely that he has helped out.
As of the writing of this article, over $18 million has been raised. There have been well over 145,000 supporters and the fund has helped out 77 businesses so far.
