Governor Gavin Newsom Considering a Curfew for California
Governor Gavin Newsom of California says that he has been reviewing studies from France, Saudi Arabia, Germany, and other places which are making him consider implementing a curfew for the state in order to stop the spread of covid-19; especially because the state is seeing an increase in cases. In the last 10 days, covid cases have doubled for the state launching 41 of 58 counties to return to “purple” – the most restrictive lockdown. He said that he would look at these countries and design and invoke a similar style of restrictions and curfew.
Newsom held a press conference where he opened with stressing the importance of wearing face masks and social distancing and then said that there will be new guidelines regarding both of those. He said they want to “tighten” guidelines around masks and distancing now as the weather is turning colder and people will be spending more time indoors. Speaking about curfews he said,
“We also are considering — full disclosure, little bit of a preview — the notion of a curfew. Now, before you jump in terms of your mindset of whether or not it’s a good idea or bad idea, we are assessing that as well. I have on my desk, quite literally, three studies from France, Germany and Saudi Arabia, interestingly, that have done comprehensive studies on the efficacy of their strategies as it relates to curfews.”
The Governor carried on to say that there are other cities and states that are considering curfews as well and because of that they want to seriously consider implementing one as well. He concluded the press conference, “We have a lot of questions about what that looks like, what that doesn’t look like. Who does it impact, who doesn’t it impact. What does a real curfew mean in terms of, just certain kinds of industry and business activities. That’s what we’re referring to in this space. But we really want the data to bear out and we want the information not to be anecdotal. We want to really take a look at those studies. Also learn from Portugal which is well-known, at least, for those who have been following internationally some of those protocols as it relates to curfews. “
