Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer Vows Statehood for Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico if Democrats Take Over the Senate
In an MSNBC interview with Chuck Schumer, the Senate Minority Leader hinted that Democrats have already began making plans if they win back the Senate this election. He indicated a dramatic altering of the American political landscape.
When asked about making Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico states, Schumer said that he would like to grant them statehood. There are two senators for each state so making D.C. and PR states would likely add four Democratic senators. He was asked if he would move to eliminate the filibuster but never gave a definitive answer, but eluded to the possibility. Getting rid of the filibuster would mean that any legislation could be passed with a simple majority.
Schumer said, “I’m not busting my chops to become majority leader to do very little or nothing. We are going to get a whole lot done, and as I’ve said: Everything, everything is on the table.” He’s even promised revenge if Republicans confirm Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, but also said they will use “all the tactics” tehy can to slow or block the confirmation.
