Kevin McCarthy Threatens to Remove Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House if She Proceeds with Another Impeachment Attempt

On Wednesday, Kevin McCarthy, Senate Minority Leader, promised a threat to remove Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House if she were to proceed with another impeachment attempt against President Trump or Attorney General William Barr as a means to keep the Supreme Court Justice seat vacant.

Pelosi has not been quiet on her disdain for President Trump in general, but especially for his moving forward with a nomination to fill the empty seat left from the passing of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Twice this week the Speaker has mentioned impeachment. Nancy Pelosi said that Representatives can impeach President Trump “everyday of the week for anything he does” in an interview with Kara Swisher from the New York Times. On ABC she said, “We have our options. We have arrows in our quiver that I’m not about to discuss right now.”

McCarthy sharply rebuked her comments and said he finds no fault in the President for moving forward with a nomination and that he should. He said, “The President is supposed to move forward and they will. The Senate is supposed to take action and they will – it’s their constitutional right and they are following through.”

He continued, “And I will make you this one promise, listening to the Speaker on television this weekend, if she tries to move for an impeachment based upon the president following the Constitution, I think there will be a move on the floor to no longer have the question of her being Speaker. She may she think she has a quiver – we do too.”

The possibility of Pelosi being removed from her Speakership is not a new one. Before the vacancy on the Supreme Court, House Freedom Caucus members had asked McCarthy to initiate a motion to vacate, meaning the removal of Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House. A closed-door meeting for House Republicans discussed the proposition of removing Pelosi as Speaker on Wednesday. Representative Andy Biggs is leading the effort to remove Nancy Pelosi as House Speaker.
